Zombies move slowly, but rarely predictably, and their stumbling and lurching will frequently mess up a perfectly lined-up headshot and cost you precious ammo. However, itвЂ™s clear from your first zombie encounter that it works terrifically. While this perspective worked brilliantly in that more action-orientated Resident Evil there was some question in my mind as to how it would translate to a more classic survival horror experience with fewer, tougher enemies and more limited resources.

The 21 years between the original Resident Evil 2 and today would not be so kind to a similarly conservative remake of Resident Evil 2, so Capcom have of necessity been more ambitious and taken more risks in reinterpreting the seriesвЂ™ first sequel.ДЇoremost among these risks is the change from the originalвЂ™s fixed-camera system to a third-person camera / shooting system similar to that introduced in Resident Evil 4. While Capcom might have impressed with their GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil, that remake, released a mere 6 years after the original game, was able to retain much of what now seems dated about early Resident Evil games without receiving much criticism. Therefore, for me (and IвЂ™m sure many others) this remake carries with it a huge weight of expectation. We were just that obsessed with the game.) While IвЂ™d struggle to play it today, itвЂ™s without doubt my most fondly-remembered Resident Evil game. (This was long before we had the internet so there was no prospect of publishing it online. All of this culminated in a game that so thoroughly obsessed me and my brother that we wrote a guide to it, complete with walk-throughs for each scenario and enemy and weapon guides. There were significant gameplay improvements, too, such as the two unlockable вЂBвЂ™ scenarios which radically remixed the charactersвЂ™ path through the game, as well as minor touches like LeonвЂ™s upgradeable weapons and (to my utter delight at the time) zombies that would split in half at the waist when blasted with a shotgun. Its urban setting lent a new urgency and drama to the story, while its protagonists Claire and Leon - a college student and rookie cop respectively - were much more relatable and down-to-earth than the elite S.T.A.R.S. While in hindsight those early tank-control, fixed camera Resident Evil games can all seem much alike, at the time it was clear that Resident Evil 2 did much to distinguish itself from and improve upon the first game. The sequel was therefore a game I greatly anticipated, and it certainly didnвЂ™t disappoint. The original Resident Evil was the first game I played on my Playstation and so will forever be the game I associate with the transition between 2D and 3D graphics, as well as the violence and more вЂmatureвЂ™ (read: adolescent) themes that the Playstation introduced to console gaming.
